How to Store Children’s Clothing So It Lasts (And Can Be Passed Down)
Many of our clients ask us the same question once their little ones outgrow a special piece:
“How do I store this properly so I can keep it?”
Whether it’s a going-home outfit, a smocked dress, or a favorite knit set, children’s clothing often holds more than fabric, it holds memories. With the right care and storage, these pieces can remain beautiful for years and even be passed down.
Here’s exactly how we store ours at home.
1. Always Clean Before Storing
Before putting anything away:
-
Wash or gently hand-wash according to care instructions
-
Make sure the garment is completely dry
Even small traces of moisture can lead to yellowing or mildew over time.
2. Choose Breathable Storage (This Is Key)
We recommend fabric storage boxes, which protect garments from dust and light while still allowing them to breathe.
At home, we use fabric storage boxes from IKEA: simple, neutral, easy to stack, and perfect for baby and children’s clothing. They fit beautifully on shelves or inside closets and keep everything organized without sealing fabrics too tightly.
Breathability is far more important than being airtight.
3. Avoid Plastic Bags and Vacuum Sealing
Plastic bags and vacuum-sealed storage can:
-
Trap moisture
-
Cause yellowing
-
Weaken fibers over time
While they may seem practical, they’re not ideal for long-term preservation, especially for heirloom or delicate pieces.
4. Use Acid-Free Tissue Paper for Delicate Items
For smocked garments, knits, or special-occasion pieces:
-
Place acid-free tissue paper between folds
-
Avoid sharp creases
This helps preserve shape and prevents long-term fabric stress.
5. Store in a Cool, Dry, Dark Place
The best storage spots are:
✔ Closet shelves
✔ Under-bed drawers
✔ Closed cabinets
Avoid:
❌ Attics
❌ Basements
❌ Areas with direct sunlight or humidity
Light and heat can fade colors and weaken fibers over time.
6. Label Your Boxes
A simple label makes all the difference. We suggest noting:
-
Size or age
-
Season or year
-
Child’s name (optional)
This makes it easy to find pieces later, whether for siblings, keepsakes, or gifting.
A Special Tip for Baby & Heirloom Pieces
For going-home outfits or particularly sentimental pieces:
-
Add a small note card with baby’s name, date, or weight
-
Store accessories (bonnet, blanket) together
These little details turn stored clothing into cherished keepsakes.
Why This Matters
When stored properly, children’s clothing:
-
Stays wearable
-
Keeps its color and shape
-
Can be passed down
-
Holds emotional value for years to come
Some of the pieces in our family have been worn by multiple children, and they still look just as beautiful.
That’s the magic of caring for clothing with intention.
