European Children’s Clothing Sizes Explained (US vs EU Guide)

European children’s clothing is designed for comfort, proportion, and everyday wear.

If you’ve ever hesitated before clicking add to cart because you weren’t sure which size to choose, you’re not alone.

One of the most common questions I receive as the founder of El Rincón de María is:
“How do European sizes compare to US sizes? Do they run bigger or smaller?”

As a mom of five and someone who has sourced children’s clothing from Europe for years, I understand the confusion well. The answer isn’t simply bigger or smaller — it’s about how European clothing is designed to fit.

This guide will walk you through it clearly and honestly.

European children’s clothing is sized by height in centimeters, not by age.

That means:

  • Sizes are based on how tall a child is

  • Length follows height very closely

  • There is less “extra room” built in

For example:

  • Size 3Y (98 cm) fits a child around 98 cm tall

  • Size 4Y (104 cm) fits a child around 104 cm tall

This is very different from U.S. sizing, which is age-based and often includes extra length and width to allow children to “grow into” clothes.

Why European Clothing Feels Smaller to U.S. Parents

European clothing is designed to fit closer to the body, without excess length or bulk. This is where most confusion happens.

European clothing usually does not run small, but it does run more precise.

That means:

  • Less extra length

  • Less excess fabric

  • A more tailored, classic fit

U.S. brands often:

  • Add extra room for growth

  • Size generously by age

  • Expect children to wear clothing longer

So when parents try European clothing for the first time, it can feel smaller — even though it is technically true to size based on height.

US vs European Size Comparison (General Guide)

This is a helpful reference point:

US Size European Size Height (Approx.)
12–18M 18–24M 86–92 cm
2T 2Y 92 cm
3T 3Y 98 cm
4T 4Y 104 cm
5 5Y 110 cm
6 6Y 116 cm

Founder tip:
If your child is tall for their age or you prefer extra length, sizing up is often the right choice.

Why the Fit Feels Different

Thoughtful details and craftsmanship are a hallmark of European children’s clothing.

European brands design clothing to:

  • Sit neatly on the body

  • Allow movement without excess fabric

  • Look polished without being tight

  • Maintain shape over time

Styles like smocked dresses, bishop cuts, and knit sets are intentionally designed to fit close to the body while remaining comfortable.

This is why European clothing:
✔ Feels less bulky
✔ Looks more tailored
✔ Often lasts through multiple seasons

When Should You Size Up?

I usually recommend sizing up if:

  • Your child is taller than average

  • You’re between sizes

  • You want extra length

  • You’re buying at the end of a season

If your child is average in height and build, staying true to size usually works perfectly.

A Note From Me, as a Mom

When I first started dressing my children in European brands, I expected them to fit the same way American clothing does, and they don’t.

I noticed this very clearly when I would buy pajamas in the U.S. and my mom would bring them with her to Barcelona. What seemed like the right size at home often fit much bigger once compared to European styles. That’s when it clicked for me: European clothing isn’t designed to be oversized or grown into the same way American clothing often is.

Instead, it’s designed to fit closer to a child’s actual height, with cleaner lines and less excess fabric. Once I understood that difference, everything made sense — the fit, the sizing, and why European clothing feels more tailored while still being comfortable.

That shift completely changed how I shopped for my children, and eventually, how I curated El Rincón de María.

Clothing designed to move with children and grow with them.
